The first question from businesses requesting a quote for heavy duty racking is usually the same: “What is the price per square metre?” There is no single answer, because heavy duty racking is built into volume, not floor area, and what drives the price is the number of storage bays created rather than the square metres covered.

This article looks at the variables that move the price in heavy duty and pallet racking systems. The aim is not to quote figures, but to help you understand what a quotation actually covers so you can compare offers from different manufacturers on equal terms.

The Starting Point: Load per Bay

The first and strongest variable is the load a bay is expected to carry. As the load increases the structural components get stronger, which feeds directly into material volume and therefore price.

A common mistake here is asking for far more capacity than needed “just in case”. An over-specified system creates unnecessary cost. The opposite is riskier: when a system is used beyond what it was planned for, the safety margin disappears. The correct approach is to measure the real weight of your heaviest pallet and plan around it.

Pallet Size and Bay Layout

Bay width is determined by how many pallets sit side by side. A warehouse using standard pallets and one working with mixed packaging sizes cannot use the same bay layout.

When bay dimensions do not fit the goods, the loss is subtle: a few centimetres are wasted in every bay, and across the warehouse this adds up to dozens of pallets of lost capacity. This is why pallet dimensions, including height, should be clarified before a quotation is prepared.

Height and Number of Levels

Fitting more levels into the same floor area is the most effective way to lower cost per pallet. However, height cannot be increased freely: building height, beam and lighting positions, the level of fire equipment and the lifting height of your forklift all constrain this decision.

As the system gets taller, stability requirements grow with it; bracing and floor fixing become more decisive. Rather than “the higher the better”, the goal is to find the most efficient height the existing building allows.

Forklift Type and Aisle Width

The aisle is the most expensive empty space in a warehouse; it stores nothing yet occupies a significant share of the area. And aisle width is determined not by the racking but by the equipment you use.

A warehouse running pallet trucks and one running counterbalance forklifts do not need the same aisle width. A layout produced without knowing the loaded turning requirement of the equipment either wastes capacity with over-wide aisles or slows operations with narrow ones. Stating which equipment works in your warehouse is one of the most critical inputs for an accurate price.

Protection Components and Accessories

On heavy duty racking the column bases take the most impact. In aisles with heavy forklift traffic, column guards and barriers cost far less than the damage they prevent.

Other complementary items commonly seen in quotations:

  • Column guards and aisle-end barriers
  • Mesh decks or shelf panels preventing small packages from falling
  • Bay addressing and labelling
  • Wall-side and row-end protection

When these items are missing from the first quotation the total looks lower; added later, the budget exceeds the original estimate. It is worth asking whether they are included when comparing offers.

Why the Surface Finish Counts as a Cost Item

Heavy duty racking stays under load in a busy environment for years. Passing the surface through a phosphate process and coating it with electrostatic powder paint protects the system from moisture and scratching. Untreated surfaces corrode over time, which affects both appearance and handling safety.

In permanently humid environments the surface choice is assessed separately. The finish may look like an aesthetic preference, but it is a technical decision that determines maintenance cost and service life.

Floor Condition and Fixing

Heavy duty racking transfers its load to the floor through the column bases. The condition of the floor therefore affects how the system is installed and, in some cases, the cost.

If the floor is not level the system will not stand truly vertical; shim plates under the bases or levelling before installation may be required. Floor fixing is not a step that can be skipped: it determines how the system behaves against lateral movement and possible impacts.

Floor levelness and suitability for fixing are assessed during the site survey. A price given without this assessment gets revised when additional work turns out to be necessary on site. In rented warehouses, obtaining the owner's permission for anchoring is also part of planning.

Comparing Cost Properly: Price per Pallet

The soundest way to compare two quotations is to divide the total by the number of pallets that can be stored. Comparison on a square metre basis hides differences in height and bay layout.

Consider this: two quotations differ noticeably, but the cheaper one includes fewer levels and leaves wider aisles. Calculated per pallet, the more expensive offer may in fact be more economical. The same calculation also reveals whether the system meets the capacity you will need in a few years.

Installation, Delivery and Design

A quotation does not consist of steel alone. Site survey and layout planning, delivery, installation and floor fixing are all part of the total. An offer covering only materials looks lower than one including installation, but the amount finally paid differs.
